Maylien Rundown
While Painting, Nobody Heard Me Scream
During May, I continued to paint Alien themed stuff, and I managed to get a fair bit painted! I even did 2 painting tutorials for painting Xenomorphs and bases for them! It’s been a while since I’ve done some painting tutorials, and it felt good to get back to doing them!
These images will open in a lightbox if you click on them to get a better view. The three Xenomorphs were used in the painting tutorials, a Scorched Xenomorph from Alien Romulus, Na’vi Xenomorph and Albino Hive Drone. The Facehugger appeared in the video for making the Alien Hive bases. Check the videos out below!
The Scorched Xenomorph in the video was the second Scorched I painted. I did a test model to be able to work out the kinks for painting with the brown highlights and stripes.
I used a cat from the Greenstuff World cats set to create this little scene, using my test model. I thought it looked like it was going in for a crouch, and the Siamese cat that likes to visit me seems like the sort of cat who would be interested in being pet by a Xenomorph, and we know from Alien that the Xenomorph is interested in cats!
Using the same painting scheme as the Alien Hive bases, I painted these cocooned Colonial Marines. The marines are painted the same as the Colonial Marines from last month, which I used a tutorial from The Painting Phase. These are also sculpted by Papsikels, and I love the detail in them. The Marines who have the Chestburster coming out of them, or just have the hole in their chest, they have the dead Facehuggers at the base of them, but the other two Marines don’t, so there could still be time to save them! They’d be great objective markers.
I also have a set of Nostromo Hypersleep chambers. There are 7 beds, one for each member of crew, and a central unit. The beds have removeable lids, so you can choose from open or closed, and the crew models fit inside the beds, too. Since I don’t have clear resin lids, I opted for chrome outer and dark interior finishes. My thought process was that, if you woke up and the interior was mirrored, you’d be face to face with yourself and that would be horrifying, so I thought maybe have it like a 2-way mirror, but with a darkened glass, so you can start to get your eyes accustomed to the light. I also chose to have red interiors on the beds, like on Alien Isolation, because in the original film, the interiors are white, and I felt that with the main units being white, the cushion being white, the sleepwear the crew wears being white… It’s just a bit too much, and the red gives it a much needed pop of colour.
I also have the Hypersleep pods from Alien Romulus. I have a model of Kay from Romulus who fits in one of these when it’s open, for the birthing scene. The pods are all removable, and since in the film, Kay is in Pod 1 and it has a warning light on it, so I painted mine with the red light, the rest with green. I also freehanded a Weyland Yutani logo on the back of the unit.
Now these bits are a bit different. The Cocooned Big Chap, the rock with him in it will sit on a trolley, so doesn’t need based. The top of the cocoon is painted on the other side, too. The Facehuggers will go on some boxes and bases at some point, once I have stuff ready for them. The third image, I’ve seen people make similar posed models with clear, coloured resin, and I always thought it would look cool as red and green metallic, so that’s what I went with. It’s not so much a model I’d use in a game, but more of a model I’d have on display. The Xen Xenomorph is another model I’ll end up just using on display, but I think it’s a cool looking model. The crouching Xenomorph I’ll probably use in games, but I need to find the right base for it. The Xenomorph crouching on the rock, I’m debating on whether I’ll use it for display or find a base that would suit it.
Now we’re in June, and it’s been a while since we’ve done some TTCombat stuff, so I’m thinking of doing a bit of Half Tilt. So… Jousting June!
Take a look at what Alien stuff I painted during Maylien!
